The Quartet played two concerts on 20 March 2007, both featuring pieces from Schubert, Elgar and Bridge. The concerts were part of their community work as Musicians in Residence in Hounslow, West London. Both concerts were a great success and enjoyed by the audiences.
The concert at the Brentford Age Concern was held just before lunch.
Only a few of the audience had ever heard a concert by a string quartet before, so Lucy introduced the instruments and explained how they were like the different sections of a choir - the cello being like the bass singers, for example.
They also explained a little about the history of the composers and the pieces they were playing.
After the concert there were some questions from the audience and the musicians chatted to them whilst lunch was being served. Despite many of the audience never having heard a classical music concert, they enjoyed the music and the new experience.
The concert was billed by the Group organisers as "Easy and uplifting classical music" and proved to be a great success. The audience was truly multinational and most had never heard a "western" classical music concert before, let alone a string quartet playing.
Michael introduced the concert and the Quartet, mentioning that they are looking forward to sharing the stage with some Asian musicians for a joint concert in the near future.
Again, the musicians explained the roles of the different instruments and, for each piece of music, a little hisory and the highlights of what to listen for.
Cathy explained how Elgar 's picture is on the current £20 note - but these notes are being phased out and the new ones have a different picture!
The music was enjoyed by all and after the concert, there was some excellent food which both the audience and musicians enjoyed!
